Schools & youth sports in Atlanta (Duluth & Suwanee) — districts, English learner programs, school sports, soccer and swimming

A school and sports guide for families moving to Atlanta (Duluth & Suwanee): public school districts (enrollment, school finder, English learner programs), state school-entry rules, school sports, youth soccer and swimming — with official links.

Public school districts

U.S. public schools are assigned by home address (attendance zones). Before you sign a lease, check the address in the district's school finder. Students arriving from Korea are usually assessed for the district's English learner program (ESL/ESOL).

Enrolling a child

Each district sets its own list — check its enrollment page. Most ask for:

• Proof of address (lease, utility bill)
• Proof of age and identity (passport, birth certificate)
• Immunization records, in English
• Report cards or records from the previous school (in English)

State rules

• Immunizations: set by the state health department — Georgia.gov — Get Required Health Records to Attend School (Form 3231)
• Kindergarten age: Public kindergarten requires age 5 on or before September 1 (Gwinnett County Public Schools). source
• School-entry screening: Children enrolling in pre-K or public school must provide an eye, ear and dental certificate (Form 3300), available from a physician, qualified provider or the local health department. source

Middle and high school sports

• School teams and eligibility rules are set by the state association — Georgia High School Association (GHSA)
• GHSA athletics require the Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form, submitted online; schools tell families an annual physical must be on file before tryouts or practice. source
• Teams usually pick players by tryout. Check sports, seasons and transfer rules with the school's coach and the state association.

Clubs and activities

Middle and high schools offer many clubs — band, orchestra and choir, robotics, debate, math and science competitions, service clubs. Each school lists its own on its Clubs or Activities page.

Youth soccer

Youth soccer runs as recreational leagues (no tryout) and competitive select leagues (by tryout), and competitive play has several levels.

• Georgia Soccer
• Georgia Soccer runs recreational (where most players start, no tryouts), academy (9U–12U) and select (13U–19U); select leagues rise from regional Conferences to the Championship to the Georgia Premier League (GPL), whose winners move up to the National League. source
